Ottomans and footstools vary in shape more than in size. Measure the top surface and the height, and check whether yours is round or square before choosing.

Size chart

Furniture Top surface (inches) Size to select
Small footstool 16 x 24 in 40 x 60 cm
Standard ottoman Top up to 20 in across S
Large ottoman Top 20 to 28 in across M
Coffee-table ottoman Top 28 to 36 in across L
Oversized ottoman Top over 36 in across XL

How to measure

  1. Top surface. Measure the width and the depth of the top. For a round ottoman, measure the diameter.
  2. Height. Measure from the floor to the top surface.
  3. Shape. Note whether it is round, square or rectangular. A round cover will not sit flat on a square top.
  4. Legs. If the legs are exposed and part of the look, choose a cover that stops above them.

A note on units. Measure your furniture in inches, then use the table above to find the size to select. Our size selector shows centimetres, because that is how covers are manufactured, so the table gives you both.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Measuring the base rather than the top. Many ottomans taper.
  • Buying a square cover for a round pouf, which leaves loose corners.
  • Ignoring the height. A tall ottoman needs the deeper size even if the top is small.

Ottoman, pouf or footstool

In the United States, ottoman usually means an upholstered footrest, sometimes large enough to serve as a coffee table. A pouf is smaller, softer and often has no internal frame. They need different covers: a pouf cover has to hold a shape the furniture itself does not provide.

Ottomans used as tables

If yours carries a tray, drinks or books, choose a dense, flat-woven fabric. A plush finish will mark where the tray sits and never fully recover.

Choosing the right fabric

If your priority is Look for Why it matters
Feet up daily Dense woven fabric Resists the abrasion of heels and shoes.
Use as a table Flat, tight weave Stays level under a tray and does not crush.
Children and pets Machine-washable cover An ottoman takes more direct contact than a sofa.

Frequently asked questions

My ottoman is round. Will a square cover work?

No. The corners will sit loose and catch. Choose a cover cut for a round top.

Can one cover fit an ottoman and a footstool?

Only if the top measurements match. Height matters as much as width here.

Will the cover slip when I put my feet up?

A cover with an elasticated hem grips under the rim. On a very smooth upholstery, a non-slip band underneath helps.
