A sofa cover only looks tailored if it is the right size. Measure once, check it against the table below, and you will get a smooth fit rather than a cover that bunches at the arms or slides off the seat.
| Furniture | Your measurement (inches) | Size to select |
|---|---|---|
| Armchair / 1 seat | 32 to 55 in | 90 x 140 cm |
| Loveseat / 2 seats | 57 to 73 in | 145 x 185 cm |
| Sofa / 3 seats | 75 to 91 in | 190 x 230 cm |
| Extra-large sofa / 4 seats | 93 to 118 in | 235 x 300 cm |
A note on units. Measure your furniture in inches, then use the table above to find the size to select. Our size selector shows centimetres, because that is how covers are manufactured, so the table gives you both.
A one-piece cover slips over the whole sofa and is quicker to fit. A two-piece cover has a separate seat section, holds its shape better on deep seats, and is easier to straighten after a busy weekend. If your sofa has loose, removable seat cushions, a two-piece cover usually looks neater.
Choose the larger size. Stretch fabric tightens to the frame, so a little extra material tucks away out of sight. A cover that is slightly too small will pull at the arms and never sit flat.
| If your priority is | Look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pets | Dense woven jacquard | A loose knit snags on claws; a tight weave does not. |
| Spills and children | Waterproof backing | The backing is what protects the upholstery, not the surface fabric. |
| A tailored look | High-stretch spandex blend | It pulls flat over the frame instead of draping loosely. |
| Everyday comfort | Brushed or velvet finish | Warmer to sit on and hides light creasing. |
Measure across the widest point of the arms, not the seat. Rolled arms add several inches on each side and are the most common reason a cover comes out too small.
Usually yes, but the fit is looser around exposed wood. Measure the full outside width including the wooden frame.
Yes. Wash cold, on a gentle cycle, and let it air dry. Avoid tumble drying, which shortens the life of the elastic.
Send us your measurements at support@frenchcovers.com and we will tell you which size to order. Include the width across the arms, the depth of the seat and a photo of the piece if you can. It takes us a minute and saves you a return.
